On-site SEO

on-site seoSearch engine optimization can be broken down into two broad areas or segments, onsite SEO and Off-site SEO. This article is concerned with On-site SEO.

When ever a new page is uploaded to the World Wide Web search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing will index that page. This means that their algorithm looks to see what the page is about and decides its where in the organic listings to rank it. If you page is about “leaky roofs” for example, algorithm will determine if you page should appear on the 1st page for the search term “leaky roofs” or page 1,345,567.

On-site or On-page SEO is a process where by Google and the other search engines are told, in terms their algorithm understands. Basically you give it the information it wants. Each search engine has its own proprietary set of things it wants to see in order to promote the rank of the page.

On-site/on-page SEO Tips

Here are a few of things you can do that will go a long way in improving your organic rankings.

Title Tag

The title is the most important element of an optimized page. It tells the search engine what the page is about. Surprisingly most pages don’t have one that is relevant t to the page! So its smart to make sure this is done properly.

Meta Description Tag

It is argued that the meta description tag doesn’t  have much affect in the ranking of your site/page, it is still important because it is used by Google engines as your page’s or site’s description in the search results.

 HTML Tags

Some HTML tags can be used to highlight certain parts of a page for SEO purposes. These are just sub titles or heading you would use to break the page down into sections for the reader. The header tag [h1] [h2] [h3] is used both for structuring the content of a page and also for SEO purposes. The search engines will give relevance to the first three headers of a page – the top header (the H1 tag) being the most relevant for the search engines.

Content

The content of a page should make sense for both human visitors and search engine Bots and spiders. Relevance is the key in both instances. The more relevant the content is to the search term the better. That’s where proper use of keywords is important. Google want its visitors to find what they are looking. Google rewards well written and helpful information.

There are many other considerations when optimizing a webpage we mention these basic ones as a way of getting great results with little real effort. We hope this has been helpful!
